| Chauvin trial: police testify against former colleague in dramatic second week Posted: 09 Apr 2021 11:00 PM PDT Chief says Chauvin 'in no way, shape or form' followed training as key witnesses form striking bookends to week The trial of Derek Chauvin, 45, the white former police officer charged with murdering George Floyd in Minneapolis last May, completed its 10th day of witness testimony on Friday. The second week was very different from the first but no less dramatic. The opening days of prosecution witness testimony last week focused on the viral, harrowing bystander video and newly released footage of Floyd's agonizing death, then on the accounts of some of the traumatized bystanders themselves. | ‘A small, sanitised existence’: what effect will the pandemic have on today’s babies? Posted: 09 Apr 2021 10:00 PM PDT When my first child was born, there were parties, flights, bus trips, visitors. My second son arrived into a very different world My son, 0, doesn't know any different. One of around 600,000 babies born in Britain in the plague year of 2020, he has spent all eight months of his life (and most of his gestation) in a world defined by distance and disease. His circle is small. He doesn't get out much. When he does, the faces that peer in at his pushchair are concealed by masks. A baby is usually a magnet for human touch; I'd guess around 300 people had held his older brother by the time he was eight months old. Perhaps 20 people have made physical contact with Aubrey. Confronted by a hyper-caffeinated Freedom Caucus, the Ohio congressman announced his retirement singing Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah. He walked before they made him run. | Weatherwatch: polar low, the blizzard-inducing phenomenon Posted: 09 Apr 2021 10:00 PM PDT Sometimes referred to as Arctic hurricanes, pressure system forms over high-latitude ocean basins Polar lows are vigorous, short lived, mesoscale atmospheric low pressure systems. Normally between 300-800km in horizontal extent, they typically last no more than 48 hours. A winter phenomenon, these lows can bring strong winds and heavy snow, leading to blizzard-like conditions. They form in polar or Arctic maritime airstreams over high-latitude ocean basins: most common formation areas are the Norwegian Sea, the waters around Iceland and the northeast Atlantic. There are different types of polar lows, each forming in slightly different ways, but the main the main mechanism behind their existence is horizontal differences or gradients in temperature.
