DEREK CHAUVIN TRIAL TO OPEN The high-profile trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on George Floyd's neck as he lay dying in May 2020, is set to begin with opening statements today. NO SURPRISES IN DRAFT COVID-19 ORIGIN STUDY A joint WHO-China study on the origins of COVID-19 says that the coronavirus likely spread from animals to humans and that a lab leak is "extremely unlikely," according to a draft copy obtained by The Associated Press. The findings, while not finalized, leave many questions unanswered, and the report's release has been repeatedly delayed. [AP]
REP-ELECT ASKS FELLOW REPUBLICANS TO GET VACCINE Rep.-elect Julia Letlow (R-La.), who won the seat vacated after her husband died from COVID-19, pleaded with her fellow Republicans to get vaccinated. HEAVY RAINFALL TURNS DEADLY IN TENNESSEE At least four people died and more than 100 required rescue after heavy rainfall and rising floodwaters overtook homes, apartments, roads and vehicles in parts of middle Tennessee. Authorities urged people to stay home and not drive through water. [HuffPost]
TEEN GIRLS CHARGED WITH MURDER IN DRIVER DEATH Two girls, ages 13 and 15, have been charged with murder after their botched attempt at stealing an Uber Eats driver's car resulted in his death. Mohammad Anwar, 66, was out making deliveries when the girls, armed with a stun gun, tried to steal his car. He sustained life-threatening injuries during the ordeal and was pronounced dead in the hospital. [HuffPost]

GA OFFICIAL: VOTING LAW WAS REVENGE Georgia Republican election official Gabriel Sterling said the state's new restrictive voting law was partly motivated by Trump's desire for revenge.
