DEMS AGAIN LIMIT WHO WILL RECEIVE A STIMULUS CHECK After putting stricter limits on who will receive another stimulus check last month, Democrats are once again changing their proposal to give most Americans suffering amid the coronavirus pandemic $1,400. 'BILLIONAIRE' TRUMP BEGS SMALL DOLLAR DONORS FOR MONEY After years of claiming he was so rich he didn’t need anyone else’s money for his political campaigns, Donald Trump is officially asking small-dollar donors ― many of them lower income and older ― to send him cash, potentially hurting the Republican Party’s small-dollar program. The request was tucked in near the end of his first public appearance since leaving the presidency Jan. 20. [HuffPost]
MARKLE: THE PALACE IS 'PERPETUATING FALSEHOODS' In a clip from Oprah Winfrey’s upcoming interview with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Winfrey asks the duchess: “How do you feel about the palace hearing you speak your truth today?” She answers: “I don’t know how they could expect that after all of this time we would still just be silent if there is an active role that The Firm is playing in perpetuating falsehoods about us.” [HuffPost]
SENATE GOP THREATENS TO DELAY COVID-19 RELIEF BILL Republicans are threatening to drag out the passage of Biden’s $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief plan in the Senate this week, accusing Democrats of advancing a partisan bill full of wasteful spending that isn’t related to the health crisis. Sen. Ron Johnson said he planned to force a verbal reading of the entire bill prior to the start of debate in the chamber. [HuffPost]
IT TOOK 3 HOURS TO APPROVE NATIONAL GUARD ON JAN. 6 Pentagon officials did not answer a request to deploy troops during the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 for more than three hours, the commanding general of the D.C. National Guard testified. Maj. Gen. William Walker said the head of the Capitol Police asked for help during the insurrection, and that senior Pentagon officials did not approve deploying the National Guard until three hours and 19 minutes later. [HuffPost]
MISSISSIPPI MUST PAY $500,000 TO WRONGFULLY IMPRISONED MAN The state of Mississippi has been ordered to pay $500,000 to a man wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 23 years ― the maximum amount state law allows. Curtis Flowers was incarcerated continuously from his January 1997 arrest until his release in December 2019. He has always maintained his innocence and had no prior criminal record. [HuffPost]
PENCE IS BACK AND HE'S LYING ABOUT ELECTION SECURITY In his first public remarks since Biden’s inauguration, former Vice President Mike Pence is pushing falsehoods about election security in an op-ed he authored for The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank. Pence called the Democrats’ first major bill of the 116th Congress, the For The People Act, an “unconstitutional, reckless, and anti-democratic bill that ... could permanently damage our republic.” [HuffPost] |
