EXTREMISTS PLOT STATE OF THE UNION VIOLENCE Members of militia groups involved in the Jan. 6 pro-Trump riot continue plotting "to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members as possible, with a direct nexus to the State of the Union,” U.S. Capitol Police acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said. SENATE RULES STRIKE BLOW AGAINST $15 MINIMUM WAGE Democrats’ push to pass a $15 minimum wage in their $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package violates Senate rules, according to the Senate’s parliamentarian, who delivered a likely fatal blow to the effort to give tens of millions of workers a raise. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25. [HuffPost]
CDC URGES GYM PRECAUTIONS Federal health officials are urging gymgoers to wear a mask at all times while exercising indoors after two separate studies found high coronavirus transmission during exercise classes at gyms in Hawaii and Illinois. In an Illinois gym, the CDC said, 68% of people who attended indoor exercise classes ended up contracting the virus. [HuffPost] |

BIDEN SPEAKS WITH SAUDI KING President Joe Biden spoke with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman for the first time as the White House is expected to release a U.S. intelligence report on the 2018 murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The White House said the pair addressed “the longstanding partnership between the United States and Saudi Arabia,” but an official account of the talk did not directly mention Khashoggi. [HuffPost]
CAPITOL RIOT SUSPECT'S EX FINGERS HIM AFTER HE CALLS HER A 'MORON' A Trump supporter charged with breaching the Capitol during last month’s insurrection was turned in by his ex-girlfriend after he texted that she was a “moron” if she couldn’t “see the election was stolen,” authorities said. Pennsylvania resident Richard Michetti faces charges of knowingly entering a restricted building, violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and obstruction of justice and Congress. [HuffPost]

WHAT'S BREWING
MCCONNELL WOULD 'ABSOLUTELY' BACK TRUMP In a breathtaking turnabout, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Fox News that he would “absolutely” back Donald Trump for president in 2024 if he becomes the Republican Party’s nominee. The startling statement came less than two weeks after McConnell’s angry slam of the former president as “practically and morally responsible” for inciting the Capitol riot. [HuffPost]
BIDEN, IN FIRST MILITARY ACTION, STRIKES IRANIAN-BACKED MILITIA The United States carried out an airstrike in Syria against a structure belonging to what it said were Iran-backed militia, an apparent response to rocket attacks against U.S. targets in Iraq. The strike, the first military action strike during the Biden presidency, appears limited to avoid the risk of escalation. [Reuters]
HOUSE PASSES EQUALITY ACT For the second time in two years, the Equality Act — a bill that would ban discrimination against people based on sexual orientation and gender identity — has been passed by the U.S. House. But advocates fear the bill could again fail in the Senate. The measure would explicitly extend the nondiscrimination protections enshrined in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. [HuffPost]
TANDEN'S FATE HINGES ON 1 GOP SENATOR Neera Tanden’s imperiled confirmation to lead the Office of Management and Budget in the Biden White House hinges on the support of Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, a GOP senator with a history of crossing party line. If she comes out against Tanden, the nominee’s path to confirmation will likely disappear in the evenly divided Senate. [HuffPost]
HYPOCRITE MILLER DECRIES 'CRUEL' BIDEN POLICIES Stephen Miller, an immigration hard-liner and architect of Donald Trump's family separation border policy, hypocritically called out Biden for “inhumane” immigration policies as he addressed the reopening of a Texas facility for unaccompanied minors. Biden press secretary Jen Psaki said the children would be processed as quickly as possible, but the move has still drawn criticism from progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. [HuffPost]
SHELL FUNDED ANTI-CLIMATE LOBBYING LAST YEAR Royal Dutch Shell vowed last September to reach net-zero carbon pollution in its business by 2050. The vague goal seemed to become more realistic when the corporation announced earlier this month that its crude oil production had peaked in 2019 and would likely never increase again. Yet the oil giant has continued to fund a network of lobbying groups that fight policies to curb planet-heating emissions and rein in new drilling. [HuffPost] |
