Business has had me moving about Los Angeles County quite a bit. The economic devastation wrought by “Stay-at-home,” and so forth is actually quite stunning. I am certain, but lack the economist’s skills to calculate, that the cost of coping with covid far, far exceeds the cost we might have incurred without governmental response of any sort. But it is not economic costs I want to discuss in this post.

Where does such unreasonable and unreasoning fear come from? Ignorance.
Where does such an extraordinary level of ignorance come from? Media.
Throughout this episode of history media has not sought to inform, but to attract clicks, views and ratings. If that attraction meant ignoring, bending, spinning or sensationalizing information, then so be it. If that attraction meant creating levels of fear that welded people into their homes, glued to their screens, all the better.
